Ready Player One, the latest Steven Spielberg science fiction movie or science fact, well mostly factual. When you compare what is portrayed in the first public trailer, release by Warner Brothers at this year's San Diego Comic Con, to the technology developed and still developing today, the similarities become spine chilling unreal.

In the beginning of the trailer, we see the main protagonist putting on wearable gear while inadvertently explaining that it's for connecting into a virtual reality called the OASIS. This wearable gear includes a headset that goes in front of your eyes that looks remarkably like the Oculus Rift, Facebook's virtual reality headset or HTC's VIVE and other virtual reality headsets. Similarly enough they both start with an "O". The gloves seem to be more advance version of Oculus Touch controllers and other VR controllers.

In the midst of putting on the headset we are thrown into a beautiful 3D, Tron like world. Seeing child-hood on-screen hero and icons up on the big screen again in full life-like details. Full size Iron-Giant from the 1999 classic kids movie, the delorean from 1985 Back to the Future drifting around in a fully life-like environment. However none of this is is science fiction, as it all takes place in virtual reality, a reality now readily available to the masses.

The trailer also showcases an esports racing event. Drivers running down in a massive warehouse to IKEA looking seats, which translates to running down the racetrack in OASIS. Now the esports industry is one of that fastest growing industries. With over 27 million viewer recorded for just one event, ESPN's broadcast of the 2014 League of Legends championship. As more people watch and compete every year in esport tournaments with VR technologies expanding along side them, it's not out of the question that in the near future that the most massively watch sports will be esports being played in virtual reality.

And on the subject of virtual racing, the intense race course shown in the Ready Player One trailer looks and feels just like the courses players build in Rockstar's GTA Online. Crazy sky, land and hybrid courses that bring more excitement and carnage to the world of racing. To those who think VR is just a phase, think again. With Microsoft, Facebook, HP, Acer and HTC, just to name a few, are all investing and developing their VR systems around the clock. With game and software developers building programs for them, virtual reality is not going away anytime soon.

Now I want to mention that the Ready Player One movie adaptation is based on the 2011 novel by Ernest Cline. An adaptation that may or may not stick with the book, but only time will tell.
