Variety is reporting Joss Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce a standalone Batgirl movie for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). If Whedon takes the reins on Batgirl, he will join the already stacked slate of DCEU films in development. A slate that includes the Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) helmed The Batman, the untitled Nightwing movie with Chris McKay (LEGO Batman Movie) directing, a Suicide Squad sequel and Gotham City Sirens being developed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad).
Variety revealed that "The project will also feature other characters from the world of Gotham." Whether that means any of the above mentioned films or characters within them will appear in the Batgirl solo film remains to be seen. The direction that Whedon will take with character is also something that is unknown.
Will he use Barbara Gordon the most popular iteration of the character? Gordon fought alongside Batman and Robin as Batgirl until the Joker shot her in the spine in The Killing Joke. An act that left her sidelined in a wheelchair. Determined to still fight crime, she took up mantle of Oracle, and provided digital support to the Caped Crusader and the rest of the Bat Family.
No other producers are currently attached. Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros Pictures Group, is overseeing with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns. More details to come as they become available.
